WAFL Round 9 Match Report

League came out strong, holding a narrow 1-point lead at quarter time. Joey Hinder showed off his elite running power with a cracking goal in the second term to keep us within reach, but East Fremantle always had an answer.

After halftime, the Sharks found their rhythm, outscoring us 7.10 to 5.3 in a second half that ultimately sealed the result.

While it wasn’t the result we wanted for Shane Nelson’s milestone, we’re incredibly grateful to East Fremantle for joining the guard of honour post-match as his brother Scott and Aaron Black chaired him off in style.

Reserves still searching for their first win of the season, the Sharks proved too good on the day. Despite the result, there were some standout performances with Nate Dimanlig racking up 37 disposals and a goal, while Matt Galjaardt added 31 touches and one major of his own. We keep building.

Reserves: West Perth 4.11 (35) def by East Fremantle 13.14 (92)

The Colts side were hot off a great week on the track – Prepping and planning for a match against the Sharks under lights on Saturday night.

The game started with a bang – With both sides hitting the scoreboard early, setting what was thought to be a close-knitted contest and although the Falcons were down at QT by 1 major, the feeling amongst the group was that this was an achievable battle.

Unfortunately – It was a night where the better team won. The Sharks’ pressure across lines, ability to press and turn their strong defence into offence was exceptional and the Falcons found it difficult to equalise the midfield battle and lessen the forward entries by the Sharks themselves.

Sebatian Hewitt was outstanding again – Helping our side to win the Hitout count by 15 for the game, closely followed by Judd Marcello who again, had 25 touches, 8 tackles and 2 goals to go with it.

The Sharks had 48 inside 50s for the match and whilst this, at times, was difficult to defend, Peter Young stood up with 13 marks and 21 disposals off half back – Trying his best to repel the best efforts of the Sharks.

A timely week off for the Colts – Gives them a real chance to rest, reset and move ahead to a big game against Claremont on Saturday June 21st.

Colts: West Perth 6.6 (42) def by East Fremantle 13.7 (85)

WAFLW Round 9 Match Report

The HART Sports Rogers Cup season kicked off R10 with a match up between the Falcons and the Bulldogs.

South Fremantle and West Perth have had historic match-ups and are often a heated exchange of fierce battles at the contest with Saturday’s game no-different. Each side looked to flex its muscles early but it was the mighty Falcons who prevailed again.

Tayah Nicholson returned to the side after some time on the sidelines and did not look out of place. Starting the game as one of our inside-mid ‘bulls’ and immediately showcased why she’s touted as a future league footballer.

We were excited to welcome back State 16 under-ager Vienna Matera who managed to kick 2 fantastic goals stemming from elite forward-half pressure.

Contest-shape and corridor usage was a real highlight in this fixture which was what was used to break the game open after a tight first quarter.

Trista Smoker was seen as one of the most consistent performers on the day with significant time and energy expelled by the Bulldogs trying their best to nullify her impact.

But is was another under-age star who stole the spotlight with what could only be considered as ‘goal of the year’ if it was ever judged in the Rogers Cup – Arybella Nelson, playing deep in defence had a multi-bounce run through the middle of the ground, dodging opponents, shrugging tackles – Culminating in a soaring, 55m goal “from downtown!”.

Falcons won the game comfortably.

Rogers Cup: South Fremantle 4.1 (25) def by West Perth 10.10 (70)

The WAFLW side entered Bulldogs territory confident that they could get the job done with training through the week being a real highlight.

Unfortunately – The game itself left a lot to be desired. Both sides’ method seemed to counter-act each other’s which saw a lot of ping-pong football between the arcs.

It’s not like the Falcons were without their chances – Finishing the game with 11 more inside 50s than the Bulldogs – But were unable to take shots/impact the scoreboard.

Both the WAFLW League and Rogers Cup sides hit the reset button as they prepare for Swan Districts on Saturday night in our PRIDE GAME for Season 2025.
