City of Joondalup WAFLW Round 15 Match Report
West Perth Falcons 1.4 (10) def. by Swan Districts 3.10 (28)
HIF Health Insurance Oval | Heritage Game
There are games where the scoreboard tells only part of the story, and Heritage Game was one of them.
As we celebrated 20 years of the WAWFL and 10 years of the WAFLW, HIF Health Insurance Oval became more than a football ground it became a place where generations of women connected through a shared passion for the game. From the pioneers who fought for opportunities, to the players proudly wearing the red and blue today, and the young girls dreaming of one day pulling on the Falcons jumper, the day was a powerful reminder of how far women’s football has come.
The Falcons went down to Swan Districts 3.10 (28) to 1.4 (10), but the group never stopped competing. Every contest was attacked with determination, every effort reflected the pride this playing group has in representing West Perth, and the team continued to fight until the final siren.
The afternoon belonged to Brooke Hongell, who celebrated an incredible 100 WAWFL & WAFLW games. Brooke’s milestone was fittingly celebrated with her kicking the Falcons’ only goal of the match, a moment that perfectly reflected the player she is. A true ball-winning legend, Brooke has built her career on courage, resilience and a relentless commitment to her teammates and the jumper. Reaching 100 games is a remarkable achievement and a testament to everything she represents as a Falcon hard work, toughness, selflessness and a never-give-up attitude.
Megan Norbury was outstanding, earning best-on-ground honours with a performance built on relentless work rate, fierce attack on the football and an uncompromising willingness to compete. Time and time again she lifted those around her, refusing to let the contest slip away.
Kayla van den Heever once again demonstrated her resilience and determination, covering the ground tirelessly and competing with enormous heart. Her willingness to work for her teammates and remain composed under pressure embodied the spirit of the group.
One of the most memorable moments came after the final siren, when the West Perth District Little League girls from Yanchep were excited to meet our WAFLW players. Seeing the next generation connect with the women representing our club today, surrounded by the pioneers who helped create these opportunities, was a powerful reminder of the legacy of women’s football and the bright future that lies ahead.
Heritage Game was a celebration of that legacy.
The result wasn’t what we wanted, but the pride, connection and belief shown throughout the day reinforced what it means to be a Falcon. We honour our past, embrace our present, and continue building a future that the next generation will be proud to inherit. Stronger together, our journey continues.
