WAFL League & Reserves Round 6 Match Report

Round 6 saw us take on Subiaco in a twilight fixture.

The 1st quarter saw us start with some aggressive football in and around the contest which was a pre game focus for us, however with a few costly turnovers saw Subiaco take full advantage of those errors and hit the scoreboard pretty quickly.

Middle part of the quarter saw us being able to have the game played in our forward half where we were able to get some momentum on the scoreboard ourselves. Subiaco then dominated the back end of the quarter where they lifted their pressure and were able to open a handy lead by quarter time.

After demanding the team at quarter time to lift in our pressure rating and winning the contest saw us outscore Subiaco for the quarter.

The second half of footy while remaining competitive throughout saw us squander some opportunities to bridge the gap on Subiaco.

Better players on the day included Riley Sprigg who went forward with his competitiveness and marking a highlight of his game.

Coen Livingstone played his best game since arriving to the club playing mainly as a Ruckman having 30 hitouts and competing well around the ground.

Roles were given to both Kai Dehavilland and Chad Mulvogue who both stuck to their task diligently.

Tyler Keitel up front with four goals worked hard to be a solid target for us, Conal Lynch who has had a great start to the season was a consistent performer from his wing throughout the day and Connor West again was a major factor in the middle of the ground for us.

Congratulations to both Matt Shannon and Ben Fairbank on making their club debuts for the club.

Matt showed over the course of the game the strong competing attributes his game brings plus his ability to make good decisions with ball in hand.

Ben’s day unfortunately ended early sustaining an injury, but showed what he will add to the group with his defensive efforts.

A special mention to the Reserves group on another solid display ,after a slow start in the first quarter, and then being challenged at quarter time from the coach, responded accordingly and started playing our way saw them notch their 3rd win of the season – well done to all.

City of Joondalup WAFLW Round 7 Match Report

West Perth went down by two points to Subiaco at HIF Health Insurance Oval, 6.6 (42) to 6.8 (44), after leading for much of the day in a tight and physical contest.

The Falcons brought pressure, physicality and composure around the contest, setting the tone early and forcing Subiaco to work for every opportunity. The performance again showed the growth and competitiveness building within the group, while also reinforcing the importance of sustaining that intensity and execution across all four quarters.

A strong moment for the club was Trista Smoker’s League debut, with the young Falcon also kicking her first League goal in an impressive first outing at the level.

Zoe Huggett finished with three goals, while Chloe Metcalf, Sara Riou and Trista Smoker also added majors.

Lexi Strachan was influential through the midfield, while Cara Dziegielewski competed strongly in the ruck and around the contest all day. Madison Dodd attacked every contest with strength and intent, Jess Roper provided important intercept work and ball use out of the backline, and Mia Robis again showed her class on the wing with her speed and skill in transition.

A hard-fought contest with plenty of positives to take forward as the Falcons continue to build.

Marlee Resources Colts Round 7 Match Report

Whenever the Falcons and Lions come head-to-head there’s always some additional spice on display with a large number of both sides closely linked in friendship and schooling circles away from the football clubs.

Saturday night was no exception with a heated, fast-paced & frenetic match under lights which saw the Falcons soar ahead and break the shackles of a losing streak to get back on the winners list and find themselves back inside the top 4!

Both sides were attacking the sticks in the first quarter with 12 scoring shots between both sides leading into the first break, with big-man ‘Duck (Harrison Wain) asserting himself early into the game with 11 possessions as QT.

What was just as impressive was Hudson Fowler, In just his second game at Colts level, finished the game with 28 touches and 9 marks – His impact felt across the ground and was continually supported by the younger midfield brigade in Blake Jones (22 Touches, 7 Marks) & Max Bowers (15 Touches, 5 Marks, 7 Tackles) among others.

Lachy Jones, debutant from Ocean Ridge JFC was impressive in his first game at the level with 12 hitouts, 14 touches and 2 marks to go with his 1 point for the day. James Barker (15 Touches, 5 tackles), our second debutant for the match also impressed – Elevated into the side for his leg-speed and ground coverage/work rate, he was able to showcase these weapons as a winger all night.

Whilst the Falcons entered the main break full of confidence, it was the Lions who responded firmly in the third, with the Falcons only managing 1.2 (8 points) for the quarter, compared to Subiaco’s 4.4 (28 points) – The question at 3QT was whether or not this young, developing colts group had what it took to steady themselves against momentum and prove to themselves that they can achieve if they believe in process and each other.

The importance of small forward, Zarran Dwyer and his contributions were also felt – Hitting the scoreboard twice and 4 front-half tackles inhibiting Subi’s D50 ball movement.

Luca Boczar, Tadhg Barrowclough and Laith De Fraine (or De-Pain, as he’s now known), rose the occasion to lift their side over the line in a brilliant game of football.

Goals: De Fraine 3, Dwyer 2, French + Gliddon + Zuchetti + McGuane 1.

MVP: Luca Boczar

Final Score: WP 9.8 (62) def S 6.12 (48)
