PLENTY MORE THAN REVENGE FOR FALCONS TO PLAY FOR

Thursday, March 31, 2016 - 9:13 AM by Chris Pike

ANY grand final rematch is always a significant moment the first time the two teams meet again the next season and that's the case on Saturday as West Perth hosts Subiaco at HBF Arena, but there's plenty more going on to make it a big day for the Falcons.

Those at West Perth involved in last year's grand final loss to Subiaco will be sure to still have that to call upon for some added motivation against Subiaco on Saturday at HBF Arena.

However, there's plenty more to play for with the day being the annual International Football Festival with both clubs wearing specially designed jumpers, and one of the biggest crowds of the WAFL season again expected to turn out for occasion.

For the game itself, though, West Perth will have memories of last year's grand final somewhere in the memory, but more importantly is to begin building some momentum for 2016 because that is what is in their control.

Following an opening round loss to South Fremantle, West Perth played its first game at HBF Arena for 2016 and beat Perth by 41 points last Saturday so the Falcons do come into the clash with the Lions with some confidence after a good performance.

However, Subiaco too will be full of confidence following wins over Peel Thunder and East Perth to open the season.

West Perth coach Bill Monaghan knows that Subiaco will again be tough opposition, but he is confident if the Falcons play to their potential then the positive result could be what they end up with.

"A lot will probably be made of it with a lot of questions asked about revenge and motivation from the grand final the previous year. We know we're 1-1 and they are 2-0, and the competition is going to be tight so we need to make sure we are at our very best every week," Monaghan said.

"I watched Subi live again on Friday and they just have a great will to compete and find ways to kick goals. They are going to be tough but our motivation won't be grand final losses, it will be to be at our very best and if we are we think we'll be competitive."

Saturday's game will also be broadcast live on 7mate from 2.30pm giving West Perth two games being televised in the opening three weeks of the season.

Combine that with a crowd that could get near 10,000 watching live at HBF Arena and it is set to be one of the biggest occasions and games of the season, and Monaghan is looking forward to seeing it all unfold.

"It's our second game in three weeks on TV, we are really not sure on Channel 9 minus two. I just thought of that one. The International Round has really developed into one of the showpieces of WAFL footy," Monaghan said.

"On a fine day we are hoping to get 7 or 8000 people to the game. It's great for the players and there's a bit of uniqueness around the jumper we were and it's good to play against Subiaco given they are our closest geographical neighbour.

"We share boundaries in our zones and they have a strong multicultural contingent like we do. It's a big day for our footy club and we hope everyone gets down here as we aim to put on a good show."
