FALCONS MAKE IT FIVE STRAIGHT, CONTINUE DOMINANCE OVER DEMONS
WEST Perth continued its winning form both this season and over Perth, beating the Demons for an eighth straight time while the 26-point victory over Lathlain Park was also a fifth in succession for the Falcons.
West Perth continues to build some strong momentum following a slow start to the season and has now beaten Swan Districts, Claremont, Peel Thunder, Subiaco and Perth over the past five weeks heading into the WA Day clash with East Perth at HBF Arena next Monday.
The Falcons have also improved to a 6-4 record on the season to be two games clear in fifth position of the Royals while also only percentage behind the third placed Peel.
Saturday's win was a hard fought one with West Perth having to battle to shake off a determined Perth who again had great service from midfielders Julian Jacobs, Clint Jones, Aidan Tropiano and Liam McKenna.
But West Perth got better as the game went on and with six goals to two after midway through the second quarter the Falcons went on to win 11.12 (78) to 8.4 (52).
The win not only is a fifth straight this season for West Perth, but is an eighth in-a-row over Perth with the Demons last win over the Falcons coming in Round 11, 2011. West Perth has also won 11 of the last 12 games at Lathlain Park, with a draw back in 2008. Perth's last home win over West Perth was Round 9, 2004.
West Perth did suffer a blow coming into the game losing premiership hard man Kody Manning, but that made it an easy decision on who would make room for ruckman Seva Mozhaev. Up against former AFL big man Angus Graham, Mozhaev worked hard for nine touches and 19 hit outs while also kicking his first two goals of 2016.
Shane Nelson continued his stunning form over the five games he has played this season with another 33 possessions, six marks for the Falcons.
Rohan Kerr is also in outstanding form and had another 30 touches, 12 marks and two goals while Aaron Black fought through the tag on the wing from Cody Leggett to still contribute 22 disposals.
Aidan Lynch finished with 22 possessions, six marks and five tackles for West Perth, captain Jay van Berlo 19 touches and six inside-50 entries and Trent Manzone 17 disposals.
Michael Lourey booted three goals for the Falcons along with the two each from Kerr and Mozhaev.
West Perth's back-line was again terrific led by a best on ground performance by Nick Rodda. He held Sam Garstone well after he kicked two first quarter goals and dominated the second half with his reading of the play. He finished with 19 possessions and eight marks.
Tyler Keitel was again good with 19 touches, seven tackles and a goal while Blake Wilhelm had 19 possessions and kept Callum Walley in check.
Andrew Strijk was well held up forward in the first half but was tremendous in the second half ending the game with 23 possessions, nine marks and six inside-50 entries.
Perth got off to a flying start coming off the bye with a goal just over a minute in to key forward Sam Garstone and then another four minutes later to Kristian Cary.
West Perth steadied with the next two thanks to Lourey and Kerr, but the Demons still went into quarter-time with an eight-point advantage when Garstone kicked his second just before the siren.
Again the Demons began the second quarter strongly when small forward Callum Walley had his one bright spot of the afternoon as he kicked an open goal. That saw the Demons' lead grow to 14 points before Kerr booted his second to steady things for the Falcons.
But Perth was still playing with plenty of hope and were back to a 13-point lead when Liam McKenna goaled at the nine-minute mark. Once more West Perth answered through Max Duffy and then were just one-point down when Lourey booted his second.
But the Demons weren’t willing to let up just yet and answered again thanks to Lachlan Dennis.
But West Perth would kick the last two goals of the half through an unlikely source with ruckman Mozhaev resting deep forward. He kicked two goals in less than two minutes and that helped the Falcons take a six-point lead into half-time.
It was tough going for both teams in the third quarter and it's one that won't be put into any capsule. Perth got the only goal of the term through ruckman Angus Graham but West Perth missed several gettable opportunities and still led by three points at the last break.
Manzone got the final term off to a perfect start for West Perth with a goal less than four minutes in when he snapped on the outside of his right boot and then Potente carried the goal line from just inside-50 thanks to some good shepherding work by Mozhaev.
West Perth then peppered the goals kicking six behinds before putting the game away when Keitel got forward to take a mark and goal from a set shot.
That stretched the lead to 26 points and while a late Brett Wolfenden goal for Perth made it 20, Lourey kicked his third with a clever snap on the siren to see West Perth win by 26.
West Perth's reserves scored a thumping 17.12 (114) to 4.13 (37) victory over Perth at Lathlain Park also on Saturday.
Corey Chalmers delivered a best on ground performance with 26 possessions and five goals with Mitch Antonio kicking three goals from 24 disposals while Angus Innes, Tyson Moulton booted two majors apiece.
Kris Shannon also gathered 26 possessions for the Falcons, Conal Lynch 24, Mitch Peirce 21, Luke Tedesco 21, Max Alexander 17 and Moulton 17. Premiership ruckman Chris Keunen had seven disposals and 21 hit outs in second game back from a broken leg.
Perth's colts started the day at Lathlain Park with a big win over West Perth to remain unbeaten this season, winning 13.18 (96) to 7.5 (47).
Kurt Monaghan kicked two of West Perth's seven goals with Brayden Thompson racking up 24 possessions, Josh Romanelli 23, Nick Marinovich 18 and Zac Guadagnin 18.
