THE SUNDAY TIMES 2016 WA FOOTBALL VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
West Perth district volunteer Dave Burton has been recognised for his significant contribution to the development of women’s and junior football after he was awarded The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year at the WAFL Sandover Medal Count on Monday, September 19.
Burton was one of 17 regional and district finalists chosen from more than 1500 nominees and has received a trip for two to the AFL Grand Final.
Previously Chair of the West Perth District Football Development Council (DFDC) for five years, Burton has been instrumental in the development of school football programs, a parent-umpire program, International Round and more recently the Joondalup Women’s Football Club, after he transitioned into the role of Female Football Advisor for the West Perth DFDC in 2013.
Burton worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help build the foundations of the Joondalup Women’s FC, completed his Level 1 and 2 coaching courses to coach the club and more recently took over as Club President.
As Club President of the Joondalup Women’s FC, Burton has created strong relationships with the West Perth Men’s club to further promote the club and expand the female football market in the district.
Burton has created a strong youth girls competition in the district to ensure a bright future for the club and worked closely with junior and senior clubs to further define a pathway for women in AFL.
With sights set on 2017, Burton is currently working with West Perth FC to transition the club to hosting Women’s League and Reserves football. This will provide female players access to the club’s gym, trainers and support services.
Burton has strengthened relationships with Wanneroo AFC, Whitford AFC and Kingsley AFC to grow female football opportunities, initially working with the clubs to host both West Australian Women’s Football League (WAWFL) and Women Exhibition matches.
Burton has brought a wealth of knowledge to his current Presidential role having previously assumed the role of Club President at Quinn’s Junior Football Club in 2000, a time when the club was suffering financial hardship.
Burton built the club from almost nothing and fulfilled all jobs including working in the canteen, marking field lines and holding fundraisers.
Burton connected the club with teams outside the West Perth district by creating a cross-division competition and most importantly, he managed to secure sponsorship interest, which provided better equipment, new jumpers and more promotional material and merchandise for the club.
West Australian Football Commission Program Manager Kane Benson congratulated Burton on his win, and emphasised the important role volunteers play in the WA grassroots football community.
“There are so many aspects of our game that just wouldn’t happen without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and it’s really important they are recognised,” Benson said.
“Volunteers are involved at all levels of the game whether it’s in the canteen, umpiring or coaching. Thanks to The Sunday Times, we can recognise the contribution and efforts from passionate volunteers who live and breathe our traditional game.”
