Laura Pugh Makes West Perth AFLW History
Sixty-seven players found themselves on club lists in the NAB AFL Women’s Draft that took place Tuesday morning. Ten of those players hail from Perth and will be playing for the Fremantle Dockers, Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs.West Perth’s very own Laura Pugh has made club history as the first player to be drafted into the AFLW, as pick 57 to the Fremantle Dockers.
“We are extremely proud to see the first AFLW player from West Perth be drafted into the competition. It is a great honour for Laura and the Club congratulate her for this achievement.” Dr Neale Fong, West Perth President.
With four seasons, fifty-six games and thirty goals under her belt, Pugh should be an outstanding addition to the Fremantle Dockers side.
Whilst she has been drafted as a versatile intercept defender she has a great history of pushing forward to kick a goal or two and stints in the midfield, as all round player.
West Perth’s Female Team Manager, Dave Burton expresses his pride in Pugh through her football journey. “Laura deserves the opportunity to fulfil her dreams, I've seen how much extra work she has put in since AFLW was launched. She is an excellent example for all the girls within our club and district that reaching the pinnacle of female football is within their reach.”
This is a big moment for everyone from West Perth and WA and an even bigger day for Laura herself. “It was a very exciting moment when I found out I was drafted, it is such a great opportunity and privilege to be a part of the Fremantle Dockers club.”
Laura said, “I was at work when I found out that I had been selected and I just missed my name being called out haha! Once in a lifetime but I will have to replay it. I received many amazing messages from all my family, friends, West Perth and the Fremantle Dockers but it still feels pretty surreal!’.
West Perth players and supporters look forward to watching Laura take on this new challenge at the Fremantle Dockers.
