Wednesday, May 1, 2024 - 3:50 PM

Donna Field and Carly Sutton, the dynamic coaching duo of West Perth's WAFLW team, recently achieved a significant milestone in their coaching journey. Both were selected to participate in the prestigious National 'She Can Coach' program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering and investing in the next generation of female coaches across Australia.

As existing Level 2 coaches, their selection into this program not only recognizes their talent and dedication but also highlights their potential to make a lasting impact on the Australian Rules Football landscape.

Field and Sutton's journey took them to Melbourne during West Perth's Round 7 clash with East Fremantle, where they immersed themselves in a world of modern coaching trends and connected with fellow coaching enthusiasts from across the country. During their time in Melbourne, Field and Sutton had the opportunity to delve into the latest innovations and strategies within the AFL/W sphere. They networked with like-minded individuals, sharing ideas, insights, and experiences that are sure to shape their coaching philosophies for years to come.

Their participation in the 'She Can Coach' program not only enhanced their own skills but also positioned them as ambassadors for female coaching excellence within the West Perth Football Club and the broader football community.

When asked how they felt about being included in the National She Can Coach Program, they had this to say:

“My time in Melbourne was intense but incredible! To have the opportunity to meet and learn from different women was inspiring. Being able to take those two days, work on ourselves and how we can help others was a rare opportunity that I will never forget.” Said Carly.

“It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by so many like-minded, passionate people of the football world. I often pinch myself with where I am on my coaching journey but opportunities like this continue to re-affirm my passion for the game and my love of teaching the next generation the fundamentals of football.” Said Donna.

Just as the club rallied behind Head Coach Clint Degebrodt during his venture to Ireland for the AFL Masters International Competition, West Perth Football Club was equally enthusiastic and supportive of Field and Sutton's inclusion in the 'She Can Coach' program. Recognizing the importance of investing in female coaching talent, the club embraced this opportunity for growth and development with open arms.

The return of Field and Sutton to the WAFLW program infused a renewed sense of energy and innovation.

Armed with fresh insights and teachings gleaned from their experience in Melbourne, they are poised to propel the West Perth WAFLW players to new heights of success and excellence. The club's unwavering support for Field and Sutton reflects its commitment to fostering diversity, inclusivity, and excellence within its coaching ranks. By empowering female coaches like Field and Sutton, West Perth Football Club sets a powerful example for the broader football community, showcasing the value of investing in the development of female coaching talent.

As Field and Sutton continue their coaching journey with West Perth WAFLW, their participation in the 'She Can Coach' program stands as a testament to their passion, dedication, and potential to inspire future generations of female coaches. With their leadership and guidance, the Red & Blue are poised to make waves not only on the field but also in the realm of female coaching excellence.
