Vale Don Marinko Junior

Vale Don Marinko Junior
The WPFC is sad to announce that Don Marinko Jnr passed away on Saturday July 27th.
Don played 164 games for WPFC, 32 games at EPFC and 11 State games. He was the son of one of the Club's greatest ruckman Don Senior.
He was West Perth coach and captain for most of 1959, a disappointing year for the club, but one where Blue Foley won the Sandover Medal. Arthur Oliver took over as coach at the end of the 1959 season and then coached into 1960,
In 1960 success came and whilst Don Junior had already handed over the coach role and then the captaincy to Blue Foley during the season, he played very well (with a broken hand) in the winning 1960 premiership side, alongside current Club Patron Ros Kelly, and Hall-of Famers Ken Ashdown, Blue Foley, Mel Whinnen and Brian France. Other famous names in that side were Frank Margaria, Ray Marinko and Joe Fanchi.
This famous Premiership stopped the archrivals East Perth from winning a three-peat in a year when Polly Farmer at East Perth won the Sandover and John Gerovich at the Bulldogs kicked over 100 goals.
Don Junior moved to East Perth in 1961, where he went on to win their fairest and fairest in 1962.
He was made a WPFC Life member and sadly was to be inducted into the WPFC Hall of Fame alongside his late father this year.
This a famous WP family and the board and all members joining passing on their deep condolences to the Marinko families.
Don Junior now joins Dad, Don Marinko Senior and brother Ray Marinko resting in peace.
Dr Neale Fong
