BROWNE PROUD TO REACH 100 BUT FAR FROM CONTENT
STEVEN Browne was proud to reach 100 games with West Perth and has already played in a WAFL premiership, in the AFL and State football but he is far from content that he has achieved everything his career has to offer.
Browne played in his 100th match in last Saturday's loss to Claremont at the Showground as he booked his name on the No. 7 locker West Perth Football Club and it's another notch on a terrific career already from the 26-year-old.
Browne began his career with West Perth in 2007 playing six league matches and impressing sufficiently to get drafted by Carlton and in three years with the Blues, he played 23 AFL matches before then returning to the Falcons in 2011.
He had a terrific first season on return to West Perth playing for WA and also finishing as runner-up in the Breckler Medal. And ever since he has continued to be a strong part of the Falcons side including in the 2013 premiership team and now has reached 100 games.
However, Browne isn’t content with what he has achieved and has set his sights on trying to win a second flag with the Falcons and also joining his grandfather as a life member by reaching 150 matches.
"Getting to 150 games now would be amazing. To be a life member like my pop would be great," Browne said.
"I just want to keep playing as long as I can and I'd like to think I have a few years left in me. Until I don’t think I can play to this level, then I'm happy to keep playing as long as I can.
"I'd like to win another premiership, that's one thing I really want to do again. Just that feeling of winning it the first time after losing two grand finals in the VFL was amazing and it's now one thing I want to experience again."
Even though Browne enjoyed his three years in the AFL with Carlton, West Perth has always been where he has felt at home and that's why he was so keen to return, and now is proud to have followed in the footsteps of his grandfather to book his name under Callum Chambers on the No. 7 locker.
"Coming back from Carlton, I just wanted to be loyal and come back to the place that I began and now to reach 100 games at West Perth is a great honour," he said.
"My pop is a life member here as well so the club has always meant a lot to me and my family. It was good to be able to come back here after my time with Carlton and hopefully we can keep achieving more as a team in the future.
"I got a message from Callum Chambers before the game and he said he was proud of me for getting my name on the locker underneath him. It's a great achievement and it's good to have my name up on there."
Despite being only 26, Browne certainly has achieved plenty and has proven himself a terrific team on his way to playing in a premiership, representing WA and playing in the AFL. The premiership obviously stands out, but he has fond memories of his time in Carlton as well particularly his debut Round 6, 2008 against Adelaide in front of 41,000 at the MCG.
"The premiership definitely stands out as a highlight in 2013 obviously, but playing my first game of AFL was a big achievement for me and kicking my first goal in that game was pretty exciting too," Browne said.
"It's mentally and physically demanding being in the AFL, but it's a good achievement to say that I've been there and done that, so it's something I am very proud of."
