FALCONS PULL OF INCREDIBLE TURNAROUND TO STUN ROYALS
WEST Perth kicked the last 12 goals of the match to pull off a simply remarkable 80-point turnaround in just over a quarter on Hog's Breath Café Ladies Day at HBF Arena on Saturday to end up beating East Perth by 38 points.
East Perth looked on track to win the first derby of 2015 on Saturday when leading by 42 points late in the third quarter, but West Perth then turned on some inspired football.
The Falcons kicked the last two goals of the third quarter and then 10 goals to nil in the last to end up winning a remarkable contest, 17.16 (118) to 12.8 (80).
It is the second time in three weeks that West Perth has come back from the dead to score a remarkable win having also beaten Swan Districts on the Anzac Day Monday after trailing by 26 points heading into time-on of the final quarter.
The win over East Perth moves the Falcons into third position on the ladder with a 4-3 record and now a win over East Fremantle this Saturday at HBF Arena will have them in second spot heading into the State game break.
West Perth coach Bill Monaghan made some moves midway through the third quarter that ended up turning the match that included putting Michael Lourey into the middle for a stint, and moving Nick Rodda and Kody Manning from defence to attack, and pushing Andrew Strijk further up the ground.
Manning's ferocious attack on the man and ball helped turn the game and he kicked two goals either side of three quarter-time while Rodda provided a strong target forward and kicked a goal, Lourey won some crucial clearances in the middle and Strijk capped off a stunning individual performance.
Strijk finished with 31 possessions, nine inside-50 entries, seven marks and two goals for the game leaving him only rivalled for best on ground honours by Shane Nelson who compiled 43 possessions, 11 clearances and seven tackles.
Aaron Black also worked tirelessly for the Falcons racking up 34 disposals while taking eight marks and kicking two goals. Lourey, Matt Johnson, Jay van Berlo, Aidan Lynch and Manning all kicked two goals apiece as well for West Perth.
Jay van Berlo also finished with 22 possessions for West Perth, Laine Rasmussen 21, Steven Browne 20, Lynch 19, Luke Tedesco 18, Drew Rohde 17, Rohan Kerr 17 and Matt Guadagnin 17.
West Perth dominated the first 20 minutes of the game but couldn’t put the score on the board. Despite goals to Lourey and Jay van Berlo, the Falcons wasted a host of gettable chances on goal and that left the door open for the Royals and they kicked the last two goals before quarter-time.
The Royals then kicked the first three goals of the second quarter as well to lead by 22 points after a goal to Tom Shanahan at the 13-minute mark.
West Perth steadied somewhat with van Berlo and Lourey both kicking their second goals of the afternoon, but once again East Perth found it far too easy to get out the back of the Falcons' defence and run into an open goal, this time it was co-captain Craig Wulff.
East Perth continued to remain in control to start the third quarter kicking the first three goals through Paul Johnson, Kane Lucas and Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, and then after a West Perth goal to Kris Shannon, the Royals kicked two more in three minutes to suddenly lead by 42 points.
However, the game then took a remarkable turn and East Perth would not score another goal for the day while West Perth turned on some simply scintillating football.
The Falcons kicked the last two goals before three quarter-time through Strijk and Manning to at least have a sniff trailing by 26 points at the last change.
It took only a minute into the last term for Manning to add a second, and four goals in four minutes courtesy of Black, two to Johnson and another to Strijk suddenly had West Perth in front and the Falcons would not look back.
The home team kept the momentum going finishing off the game with goals to Lynch, Rodda, another to Lynch, Black and Fowler to have turned around a 42-point deficit to win by 38 points in little over a quarter of football.
West Perth's reserves also recorded an emphatic 85-point victory over East Perth in the first derby between the Falcons and Royals of 2015, winning 20.14 (134) to 7.7 (49).
Hayden Yarran booted six goals from 13 possessions and 10 marks for the Falcons with Chris Franklin, Marc Crisp and Corey Chalmers booting two goals apiece. Chalmers also racked up 29 possessions.
Tyler Keitel played his third match in West Perth colours and got to enjoy the victory against his former team with three goals from 14 disposals and four marks.
Trent Manzone also racked up 35 possessions, eight marks, seven inside 50s and a goal for West Perth's reserves with Brayden Antonio compiling 23 disposals, Steve Potente 21, Blake Wilhelm 21, Broderick Walton 18, Crisp 17 and Joe Morrow 17.
West Perth's colts missed a chance to consolidate top spot on the ladder with East Perth starting the day at HBF Arena with a 10.13 (73) to 7.7 (49) victory on Saturday.
Daniel Robertson kicked two goals in the loss for the Falcons colts while Ben Mountford compiled 23 possessions, Scott Nelson 23, Troy Manners 21, Conal Lynch 19, Jacob Turner 17, Brody Zanon 16, Tim Smith 16, Angus Allen 16, Alphonse Charlie 16 and Kael Coleman 16.
