FALCONS FLY HOME TO BEAT TIGERS IN BLACK'S 100TH
WEST Perth stormed home to kick the only five goals of the last quarter to beat Claremont by 10 points at HBF Arena on Saturday to remain in second spot on the WAFL ladder and all but secure a finals position in 2015.
Claremont kicked the first two goals of the game and led for the majority of the afternoon, including by 21 points at three quarter-time, but West Perth finished full of running kicking the only five goals of the last term to end up winning 13.12 (90) to 12.8 (80).
The win means that West Perth remains unbeaten after eight games at HBF Arena so far this season and also improves the Falcons to 10-5 record to remain solid in second position on the ladder with five games remaining in 2015.
The win also saw West Perth celebrate the 100th game of premiership player, state representative and Sandover Medallist Aaron Black who finished with 18 possessions and two goals in his milestone game.
It capped a great day for West Perth at HBF Arena with all three grades winning on the back of big last quarters with the league team kicking the only five goals of the fourth term, the reserves six goals to one and the colts six goals to two.
Corey Chalmers kicked three second quarter goals to get West Perth back into the contest with Matt Johnson and Black both adding two goals apiece.
Shane Nelson continued his outstanding season in the midfield for West Perth racking up another 29 possessions to go with a crucial final quarter goal.
Captain Jay van Berlo led the team from the front in the absence of co-captain Luke Tedesco and premiership stars Matt Guadagnin, Jordan Jones and Rohan Kerr to finish with 26 possessions and nine tackles.
Trent Manzone also stepped up for the Falcons making the most of his opportunity in the league team compiling 25 disposals to go with seven inside-50 entries, five marks and four tackles.
Ray Bartholomew worked hard for 19 touches for the Falcons with Aidan Lynch gathering 18 disposals and laying 13 tackles while Blake Wilhelm had 16 possessions and a goal off half-back.
Claremont has made a habit of making fast starts in recent times with their tall forwards stepping up and that's exactly how Saturday's clash at HBF Arena began with Kepler Bradley and Beau Maister kicking the first two goals of the game.
Black then kicked West Perth's first major from a set shot deep in the pocket after he was rewarded for some hard running, and despite another Falcons goal to Andrew Strijk before quarter-time, Claremont was on top by 14 points at the first change.
Claremont then again started the second quarter well with Maister and Bradley both kicking their second goals, and Ian Richardson his first two of three for the game with the Tigers' lead growing to as much 25 points, but the Falcons hit back before half-time.
Chalmers managed to boot three goals for the second quarter alone and then when Black snapped one quickly out of a pack shortly before the main break, the Falcons had done well to close the half-time deficit to just five points.
However, Claremont wrestled back the momentum in the third quarter after a goal to Tyler Keitel gave West Perth its very first lead of the afternoon.
It lasted little more than a minute with Richardson's third goal put Claremont back in front and then goals to Shane McAdam, Jack Bradshaw and Bradley before three quarter-time saw the Tigers in control with a 21-point advantage at the last change.
West Perth gained the advantage of the slight breeze in the final quarter, but that didn’t do the job for the Falcons. Instead an inspired first 16 minutes of football set up the win with Marcus Adams getting the ball rolling when he drifted forward to kick truly.
Wilhelm then kicked the first goal of his league career to bring West Perth within eight points and the margin was just two minutes later when Johnson snapped truly for his second goal of the afternoon.
Nelson got on the board to the Falcons in front for just the second time in the day and Michael Lourey's lone goal of the day saw West Perth stay in front by 10 points at the final siren despite Claremont continuing to drive the ball forward, and have shots on goal in the dying minutes.
West Perth's reserves came away with a strong 17.13 (115) to 10.11 (71) victory over Claremont at HBF Arena on the back of six goals to one in the final quarter.
Callum Papertalk was the star for West Perth kicking 7.5 from 18 possessions and eight marks to put his hand up for a long-awaited league debut.
Hayden Yarran also booted three goals from four kicks for the Falcons with Northern Territory recruit Mark Hamilton showing exciting signs with three goals from 13 possessions.
Dean Munns compiled 28 possessions for West Perth, Brayden Antonio 27, Kaidyn Fullgrabe 22, Troy Manners 21, Clint Hinchcliffe 21, Mitchell Peirce 20 and Broderick Walton 17.
West Perth's colts stormed home to beat Claremont 9.2 (56) to 7.8 (50) at HBF Arena on Saturday with the Falcons booting six goals to two in the final quarter with Mitch Antonio booting five of those.
Antonio ended up with six goals for the game from 22 possessions and nine marks with Ben Mountford gathering 24 disposals for West Perth, Scott Nelson 23, Angus Allen 22 and Conal Lynch 19 to go with 11 tackles, six inside 50s and a goal.
