NELSON, STRIJK, ADAMS TO LEAD WEST PERTH'S SANDOVER HOPES

Monday, September 21, 2015 - 2:18 PM - by Chris Pike

AARON Black and Shane Nelson came first and second in last year's Sandover Medal count and there's every chance the West Perth premiership pair will be right among the 2015 top vote winners on Monday night.

Black became West Perth's first Sandover Medallist since Robbie West in 1993 when he stormed home to poll 47 votes last year to take home West Australian football's most prestigious individual award.

That saw him win by one vote ahead of his good mate and premiership teammate Nelson, who has won the last two Breckler Medals and should poll well again in this year's Sandover Medal.

FEROCIOUS FALCONS FLY INTO GRAND FINAL

Sunday, September 20, 2015 - 10:20 PM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth showed no ill-effects from playing an 11th straight match or from being down to two men on the interchange for the second half to win through to next Sunday's WAFL grand final following a gutsy 29-point preliminary final win over East Perth at HBF Arena.

West Perth came into the contest on the back of a 55-point second semi-final loss to Subiaco having not had a bye since Round 15 and then lost Laine Rasmussen (ankle) and Matt Johnson (hamstring) for the afternoon by early in the third quarter.

East Perth was in outstanding form coming into the preliminary final having won seven of its last eight games, including cut-throat finals against Claremont and Peel Thunder, and the Royal started strongly with the breeze kicking four goals to one in the first quarter.

However, from that point on West Perth worked its way on top with five goals to one in the second quarter, three to East Perth's four into the breeze in the third term and then a dominant five goals to one in the last to win 14.13 (97) to 10.8 (68).

IN THEIR WORDS – LAINE RASMUSSEN PRELIMINARY FINAL

Saturday, September 19, 2015 - 5:03 PM - by Laine Rasmussen

IT is the time of year everyone involved in football gets excited for, be that players, coaches, staff and most importantly our supporters. Elimination finals take more than just 22 players working simultaneously to win.

They take individual feats of brilliance, devoted leadership and a hell of a lot of heart. Sometimes we have to rely on the ones we know will give everything for the club.

Big time games call for big time players and even bigger time journalism (I know that isn’t perfect grammar Bill but it has dramatic effect), that’s why the club has called on me for the Preliminary final edition of the West Perth Player Column. Fighting through the adversity of my questionably sticky keyboard, I’ve put together a comprehensive rundown of our week leading into our most anticipated game of the season to date.

JONES IN THE MIX AS FALCONS FOCUS ON REJUVENATION

Friday, September 18, 2015 - 1:31 PM - by Chris Pike

JORDAN Jones is in contention to be a surprise inclusion for West Perth in Sunday's WAFL preliminary final against East Perth at HBF Arena as the Falcons try to inject some fresh legs for what will be their 11th consecutive match since their last bye.

West Perth's last bye was way back in Round 15 with the Falcons playing the last eight games of the home and away season without another break, but they were able to secure second position on the ladder having won 13 of 20 games.

West Perth then proved too good for a weakened Peel Thunder side winning by 109 points in the qualifying final at HBF Arena, but it was a tired looking outfit in the second half of last week's second semi-final against Subiaco with the Lions kicking 13 of the last 16 goals to win by 55 points.

FALCONS TO HOST IN ROYALS IN PRELIMINARY FINAL AT HBF ARENA

Tuesday, September 15, 2015 - 11:26 AM

WEST Perth will return to HBF Arena this Sunday to host East Perth in the WAFL preliminary final with a place in next Sunday's grand final on the line against Subiaco.

West Perth has won 10 of its 11 games at HBF Arena this season, with the only loss coming with nothing at stake for the Falcons in Round 23 against Claremont, and now the Falcons need just one more victory to advance to a grand final for the second time in three years.

West Perth's opponent on Sunday in the preliminary final will be arch-rival East Perth with the Royals having played in the last two grand finals against West Perth and Subiaco, but coming up short, and now looking to get back to a third successive decider.

FALCONS LOSE ALL THREE SEMIS BUT TURN FOCUS TO PRELIM

Monday, September 14, 2015 - 1:21 PM - by Chris Pike

WAFL semi-final weekend didn’t go to plan for West Perth with all three grades losing with the Falcons' reserves and colts seeing their seasons ended, but the league side now turns their attention to a preliminary final against East Perth.

West Perth had a day to remember to open the finals for 2015 at HBF Arena the previous Sunday with the league side thrashing Peel Thunder by 109 points in a qualifying final, and the reserves and colts winning elimination finals over East Perth and East Fremantle respectively.

However, it was the complete opposite this Sunday with the colts losing at Bendigo Bank Stadium to Peel Thunder and the reserves going down to Swan Districts at Medibank Stadium on Sunday night with both Falcons teams being eliminated as a result.

DIRTY DAY FOR FALCONS

Monday, September 14, 2015 - 12:14 PM - by Darrell Kent

IT was a day that didn’t go to plan for West Perth on Sunday. The league team was defeated after a strong first quarter, the reserves were eliminated after establishing a handy early lead and the colts were also knocked out after a slow start to their game in Mandurah.

At least the senior side will have another chance in the preliminary final at HBF Arena on Sunday. Even though the results were disappointing it does not take away from the terrific achievement of West Perth being the only club to have three teams play finals and go into the second week.

The Falcons played a very good first quarter against minor premiers Subiaco at Medibank Stadium on Sunday. Dangerous Lions forward, Shane Yarran, kicked the first goal of the match at the one-minute mark but the Falcons then took control to kick the next three. Key forward Michael Lourey scored the first two. The first was from outside 50 after taking a strong mark. The next was at the nine-minute mark when he was on the end of a Jay van Berlo pass. Lourey was involved in the third as well when he passed to Matt Johnson after Andrew Strijk used the ball precisely from half back. Read More [+]
