Sixty-seven players found themselves on club lists in the NAB AFL Women’s Draft that took place Tuesday morning. Ten of those players hail from Perth and will be playing for the Fremantle Dockers, Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs.West Perth’s very own Laura Pugh has made club history as the first player to be drafted into the AFLW, as pick 57 to the Fremantle Dockers.

PRESS RELEASE – SENIOR COACH APPOINTMENT

The West Perth Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Geoff Valentine as its Senior Coach. Geoff was a member of the 1995 Premiership Team and Senior Assistant Coach of the 2003 Premiership Team.

After ten seasons as Senior Coach, the West Perth Board has made the decision to make a change as they look to appoint a new Senior Coach who will lead the program through the next three to five years.

Regardless of the result in the Grand Final next Sunday Falcons supporters cannot help but admire the performance of the League team this year. Written off by many at the start of the year and defeated by ninety eight points by the Bulldogs two weeks ago the players staged a remarkable effort to book a Grand Final berth with a twenty six point victory against South Fremantle. Their pressure all day was a sight to behold as they forced their more fancied rivals to make a number of errors while West Perth managed to take advantage of the opportunities that came their way.

The last couple of months have been some of the most difficult and significant in West Perth’s long rich history.

As most of you will be aware the Club found itself in a very difficult financial position and had to appoint Voluntary Administrators on 25 July.  We’ve now come out the other side of that process with restructured finances and renewed enthusiasm for the future of West Perth.

West Perth could not have been more impressive in their fifty three point victory over Claremont at The Arena on Sunday. The Falcons kicked the first goal within two minutes and were never headed in what was one of their best performances for the year. From the first bounce West Perth exerted tremendous pressure on their rivals and as a result they controlled the play to look the better side for most of the day. There will need to be a repeat performance next week when they return to Fremantle Oval to take on the Bulldogs in an encounter that will decide who takes on Subiaco in the Grand Final.

Breckler Medal Awards Night 28 September 2018

During the Voluntary Administration period, a discussion was held with the Administrators regarding planning for the Breckler Medal night. Players fees, that were received in early 2018, included an amount for the Breckler Medal function. This money was received early in the 2018 year, and no longer available to the Club to offset the cost for players to attend the function.  The discussion with the Administrators was whether to not host the Breckler Medal function at all, or alternatively, charge the players to attend the function. To honour the payments already received the decision was made to host separate functions and to have tickets available for general sale to help offset the lack of revenue from the players attending the function. The Club is trying to financially manage the fact that the player fees were received at the beginning of the year, and we now do not have those funds to help pay for the functions.
