ROUND 18 PREVIEW V PERTH

Saturday, July 22, 2017 - 2:27 AM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth will look to return to the winner's list after the bye this Saturday against Perth at Lathlain Park against a team the Falcons have lost to since 2011 and at a ground they haven’t lost at since 2004.

Perth is back to Lathlain Park to host West Perth but it hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Demons against the Falcons for a long time.

In fact West Perth has not lost at Lathlain Park since Round 9, 2004 winning 11 of their past 12 trips to the ground with the only hiccup being a draw in Round 9, 2008.

FALCONS PAY FOR INNACURACY BUT STILL IN FINALS SPOT

Tuesday, July 11, 2017 - 10:03 AM - by Chris Pike
KICKING eight behinds only in the first half made for a tough afternoon against Peel Thunder in NAIDOC Round on Saturday at HBF Arena but the positive is West Perth remains in the top five and can gear up for a big finish to 2017 after this week's bye.

When one teams kicks eight straight goals with their opening eight shots and the other kicks eight behinds, the result is a 40-point lead to the accurate and that was the case at HBF Arena on Saturday.

Peel led West Perth 8.0 to 0.8 at half-time as the reigning premiers made their Falcons pay for their inaccuracy in front of goal while taking full rewards for taking their chances. Read More [+]

GOALLESS FIRST HALF TELLS THE STORY

Monday, July 10, 2017 - 9:29 AM

FIVE more scoring shots, 25 more inside 50s, a goalless first half and a 30-point loss. They were just some of the facts that Falcons supporters had to come to terms with after the game against Peel at HBF Arena on Saturday.

It was a contest that the Falcons were not in all day after Peel kicked eight goals straight in the first half to eight behinds by the home team. Peel didn’t score their first behind for the day until the 20-minute mark of the fourth quarter and even that was a rushed behind.

This may sound like the ramblings of someone who doesn’t know what to say about what was a hard to understand game of football and, if so, you are right.

NAIDOC ROUND PREVIEW V PEEL THUNDER

Saturday, July 8, 2017 - 10:50 AM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth is back at HBF Arena to take on Peel Thunder in the WAFL NAIDOC Round on Saturday with the Falcons looking to replicate its earlier season standout performance against the reigning premiers in Mandurah.

WEST Perth and Peel Thunder both currently sit inside the WAFL top five with just one game between them but the difference between a win and loss will be stark for both on Saturday when they meet at HBF Arena.

West Perth and Peel have a recent of habit of playing some exciting, free-flowing and close encounters and this Saturday could very well be another of those with plenty on the line for both clubs.

AARON BLACK COLUMN - THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

Saturday, July 8, 2017 - 9:52 AM - by Aaron Black

Last week was a tough slog against Subiaco in some pretty interesting conditions. It had rained heavily for a few days and the ground had begun to look more like a swimming pool than a football oval.

Subiaco are the best contested football side in the competition, and knowing this we knew winning the contested ball stats would be a huge indication of whether we would be able to win the game or not. The conditions had a major impact on this as well, with heavy rain making it contested every single possession contested.

We started the game off extremely well with the ball pinned inside our forward 50 but unfortunately we couldn't kick a goal, which is becoming far too common in recent weeks. We managed to kick four behinds in the first 15-20 minutes. Showing our dominance early but our inability to score.

BILL GETS GRILLED – BILL MONAGHAN ROUND 15 Q & A

Friday, July 7, 2017 - 8:23 PM - by Matt Barnsley

WEST Perth's longest-serving coach Bill Monaghan discusses a narrow loss to Subiaco in horrible conditions for the International Football Festival at HBF Arena and looks ahead to the NAIDOC Round clash with Peel Thunder back at the Joondalup venue.

QUESTION: For the second straight week you finished full of running and were coming hard at the end, but just couldn’t get that goal to get in front?
ANSWER:
Look last week it was a case of being really inaccurate in front of goals. This week it was a result of the conditions and clearly there was less of a puddle at the end towards the left than the right end of the ground. We unfortunately were kicking into the puddles which didn’t help us in the last quarter. I thought apart from the second quarter our effort was there and we were able to match them in a lot of areas. It's disappointing to come up short, I thought we were a chance to pinch it there for a bit and we got within five points and then a quick turnaround and up the other end it blew out to 11 or whatever it was. Which was disappointing and the players, they didn’t get the reward for the effort. I thought Subiaco were fantastic as well so given the conditions it was a pretty hard fought game.

LIONS HOLD OFF FALCONS IN WET INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL FESTIVAL

Monday, July 3, 2017 - 6:58 PM - by Chris Pike
THE weather might have put a halt on a lot of the International Football Festival celebrations but it created a tough and brutal affair between West Perth and Subiaco at HBF Arena with the Lions prevailing by 11 points.

The conditions that greeted both clubs at HBF Arena might have dampened the attendance and the celebrations for the annual International Football Festival, but it did set the scene for what was always going to be a tight, physical and tense affair between two strong rivals.

With rain constantly falling throughout the game and large puddles taking up chunks of the HBF Arena surface, playing any sort of attacking and free-flowing football became impossible. Winning the contested ball and gaining territory any way possible became the name of the game. Read More [+]

FALCONS FALL SHORT IN HARD SLOG

Monday, July 3, 2017 - 9:10 AM - by Darrell Kent

SUBIACO beat West Perth by 11 points in Round 3 and they repeated that performance at HBF Arena on Saturday. It would be fair to say that the conditions were vastly different, though. Earlier in the year the sun was shining but this certainly wasn’t the case on Saturday.

Heavy and persistent rain had left the ground with large puddles, particularly at the Perth end, and as a result the game was a real war of attrition. West Perth’s form against the ladder leaders, who have only lost one game for the year, has been very good with them having the opportunity to win both encounters but falling just short on both occasions. At least the ducks who settled into the puddle at the Perth end after the game enjoyed what was a miserable day for football.

ROUND 15 PREVIEW v SUBIACO

Friday, June 30, 2017 - 7:45 PM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth celebrates its annual International Football Festival against Subiaco on Saturday at HBF Arena, but it's the four points that are crucial for the Falcons to remain in the WAFL's top five.

The International Football Festival has become one of the biggest days on the WAFL calendar and another big crowd is expected at the game on Saturday, but that can't detract from the importance of the contest for the Falcons in particular.

West Perth come into the game just clinging to fifth position just the one game clear of Claremont and two ahead of East Perth. A loss on Saturday and a win for the Tigers over Peel and the Falcons will be out of the top five.

AARON BLACK COLUMN - THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

Friday, June 30, 2017 - 7:39 PM - by Aaron Black

It’s fair to say it's been a bumpy few weeks for the side as we have won just one game out of our last three defeating Swan Districts three weeks ago and losing more recently to South Fremantle and Claremont.

We have made strides in a few areas but are disappointingly a long way away from where we would like to be.

Due to some disappointing and close losses we have given up a great position on the WAFL ladder to now sit fifth in the middle of the pack, making things all the more important in the coming weeks.
