IN THEIR WORDS – BLAKE WILHELM ROUND 13

Friday, June 16, 2017 - 6:03 PM - by Blake Wilhelm

THE player columns have been rather quiet of late, so Pikey thought it would be fitting to enlist my help to bring them back to life in 2017.

I will start with a recap of last week, which was a massive week for West Perth Football Club with one of the all-time greats Andrew 'ya can't say that' Strijk playing his 200th game for the club. This is an absolutely outstanding achievement to be able to play such a large number of games for the one club, and I feel honoured that I got to play in the milestone game with him and also help celebrate with a win. Hopefully the bluetack can continue to hold his body together and he can continue to help us win games.

Whilst the disappointing loss to East Perth the week before was hard to swallow, as a playing group we knew that we play best when we are challenged and had all the confidence in ourselves that we could travel to Steel Blue and get the job done. Which is exactly what we did, and if the majority of our forward line (namely myself) didn't have the "yips" then the scoreboard would have reflected a better picture of how I feel we played on the weekend.

BILL GETS GRILLED – BILL MONAGHAN ROUND 12 Q & A

Friday, June 16, 2017 - 5:38 PM - by Matt Barnsley

WEST Perth coach Bill Monaghan gave his thoughts on the crucial win over Swan Districts, Tyler Keitel's exploits up forward, Andrew Strijk's 200th game and looked ahead to this Saturday against South Fremantle at HBF Arena.

QUESTION: It wasn’t always pretty, but it was such a big game that you would be delighted with the final result?
ANSWER: We probably squandered a few opportunities early, think we had 16 scoring shots in the first half to seven. We missed a couple of real easy ones which has been a bit of a pattern for us which is disappointing. We felt 19 points probably wasn’t enough because we knew Swans have been in ripper form so they came hard at us. A couple of times in that last quarter too they hit the lead and we challenged them. We just felt that if we could get a couple in a row and get a bit of space then sometimes when you chase hard all day and you can’t overtake it only takes one or two goals back to back that can take the wind out of their sails. I thought the last five or six minutes we controlled the game and we got two and a half goals up. They got a late one but from the 25-minute mark of the last quarter it looked like we were going to hold on. We’ve shown over the past couple of years and you watch games of footy that if there’s still enough time you got to be wary. I thought the players dug deep for Andrew’s 200th and VB led from the front, especially in the last quarter through his efforts. I thought Lourey looked sharp forward. Blake Wilhelm did a good job on Bennell, Munnsy was again outstanding keeping Ellard to two possessions in the first half. Then he alternated between him and Faulkner in the second half. Kody was fantastic down back. We had good contributors I guess without anyone being outstanding. Lourey kicks three, Tyler four, even Rudy who was in and out of the game finished with a couple. It was a really good team effort. Any success we have as a club is based around us working together as a team and I thought we did that well.

A REMINDER TO OUR PASSIONATE SUPPORTERS

Tuesday, June 13, 2017 - 10:54 AM

Everyone knows we have some of the most passionate and enthusiastic members and supporters in the WAFL but passion and enthusiasm can also make us behave in a manner we normally wouldn't.

I received a letter from a member this week which serves as a reminder to us all to be aware of our conduct - both at home and at away games. While we never want to dampen the cheers of encouragement towards our Read More [+]

AARON BLACK COLUMN - THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

Monday, June 12, 2017 - 6:53 PM - by Aaron Black

We have a big milestone achievement this week, as Andrew Strijk plays his 200th game, making him the 20th player in West Perth’s 132-year history to do so.

A wonderful achievement for a fantastic servant and even better personality from our football club. As we take on Swan Districts in a must win game, there is no bigger motivation to win than to do it for one of the best to have worn the red and blue jumper.

Debuting for West Perth in 2006, Strijky was drafted by the Eagles in 2010, playing 13 games over a three-year span before winning a premiership in 2013, a fairest and best also that year and representing the state on six occasions to cap off his very impressive resume.

WEST Perth showed tremendous heart to respond to a challenge by Swan Districts with three consecutive last quarter goals to win by eight points at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday to celebrate Andrew Strijk's 200th game.

Swans-Falcons games never fail to disappoint and this was yet another tremendous contest with plenty on the line and milestones on either side of the fence to celebrate at Steel Blue Oval.

Both teams entered the contest with 6-3 records and with South Fremantle's loss to Peel on Saturday, it opened the door to only be percentage out of second spot with a game in hand.

IT was an important day in more ways than one at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday. West Perth was desperate for a win to move into third place and Andrew Strijk played his 200th game.

WEST Perth's impressive WAFL winning streak came to an end at the hands of East Perth in the WA Day Derby at Leederville Oval with the Royals taking out a 46-point win.

That set the scene for what shaped as a terrific derby battle at Leederville Oval on WA Day and the crowd responded with 5289 attending in what was the biggest turnout so far this WAFL season across the opening 11 rounds.
