In the 1960s they were fiercely competitive on-field opponents. But these days they are the best of mates and when Perth and West Perth are opposed, they enjoy catching up.
Pat Astone and Bill Dempsey were key ruckmen in their teams' premierships - Pat in Perth's hat trick of flags (1966-67-68) and Bill with West Perth in 1969 and 1971.
Between them they played 558 league games, Pat 215 Read More [+]

FIERCE OPPONENTS ON FIELD, GREAT MATES OFF FIELD
FALCONS TOO GOOD FOR DEMONS
WEST Perth was too good for a tenacious Perth at HBF Arena on Saturday. The Falcons looked like blowing the game apart on a number of occasions but the Demons always fought back to go under by just 19 points.
This margin could have been higher, though, as an inaccurate West Perth won by 1.13. The victory was also a fitting tribute to captain, Jay van Berlo, who played his 150th game.
ROUND 7 PREVIEW V PERTH
WEST Perth is back home at HBF Arena to take on Perth on Saturday looking for a third straight WAFL victory and to celebrate the 150th game of captain Jay van Berlo.
The Falcons were rocked three weeks ago with a 103-point defeat at the hands of South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, but how they responded would tell the story of their season.
And to West Perth's credit, it has hit back impressively to beat Peel Thunder in Mandurah by 35 points and then last Saturday handing Swan Districts its first loss of the season with a five-point triumph at HBF Arena.
VAN BERLO ADDS LIFE MEMBERSHIP TO GROWING LIST OF ACHIEVEMENTS
AS Jay van Berlo prepares to earn West Perth life membership by playing his 150th game on Saturday against Perth at HBF Arena, he can't help but pinch himself over everything he's achieved in his career to date.
Van Berlo has become a remarkably decorated player over his 149-game career to date having won Breckler Medal fairest and best awards in 2008 and 2016, playing in the 2013 premiership, representing Western Australia three times and playing 32 matches in the AFL with Fremantle.
He was also co-captain alongside Luke Tedesco for two years and is now in his second season as sole skipper at the Falcons ahead of earning life membership by playing his 150th game on Saturday at HBF Arena against Perth.
BILL GETS GRILLED – BILL MONAGHAN ROUND 6 Q & A
WEST Perth's longest-serving coach Bill Monaghan talks about Saturday's win over Swan Districts, what is impressing him most with the last two wins and looking ahead to this Saturday against Perth at HBF Arena.
QUESTION: Must have been happy with that performance to beat the unbeaten Swans?
ANSWER: We did a lot right during the day, probably at times it felt like we should’ve been a lot further ahead. In the end we were pretty lucky, we did a lot wrong in the last two or three minutes, some things that we can really learn from. Sometimes you don’t really get the opportunity at training to practice those things in that sort of pressure cooker. We will take a lot away from the win. South Fremantle two weeks ago horrible, fantastic last week against Peel and we backed that up today against a side that was four and zip.
VAN BERLO PROUD OF HONOUR TO BECOME WEST PERTH LIFE MEMBER
WEST Perth captain Jay van Berlo achieves a dream this Saturday at HBF Arena by playing his 150th game with the Falcons to earn life membership but a third straight WAFL victory is his focus.
From the moment he made his league debut for West Perth in 2007, van Berlo has been one of the WAFL's hardest working and most consistent on-ballers with him winning the club's fairest and best awards in 2008 and 2016 along with being runner-up in 2014 and 2015.
His form and commitment to West Perth has never dropped off now over a 149-game career that includes the two Breckler Medals, the 2013 premiership, representing Western Australia on three occasions being in his fourth season as captain.
FALCONS DELIVER TO HAND SWANS FIRST LOSS
WEST Perth delivered a second straight stirring performance to hand Swan Districts its first loss of 2017 in a tremendous ANZAC Round contest at HBF Arena on Saturday.
Little separated the two teams all afternoon with West Perth's 26-point lead late in the third quarter the biggest break in the contest.
But from there, Swans kicked the next three goals either side of three quarter-time to set up a thrilling finish in the clash that is now an annual event to commemorate ANZAC Day.
A TOP WIN
THERE is a lot to like about the group of players who represent the West Perth Football Club. They really do play for their jumper, coach and supporters. This was never more evident than at HBF Arena on Saturday when the Falcons beat the previously undefeated Swan Districts.
Early on they looked like being outplayed before taking control in the middle stages and holding on for a hard fought five-point victory. The Reserves also had a win but the Colts went down. After five games all three teams have won three and lost two; a good place to be at this stage of the year.
ANZAC ROUND PREVIEW V SWAN DISTRICTS
WEST Perth bounced back impressively last week to beat Peel Thunder and will look to make it two wins in-a-row hosting the undefeated Swan Districts in the annual ANZAC Round clash at HBF Arena on Saturday.
The two teams do battle in the ANZAC Round for the sixth straight time with Swans having won the first three of those meetings and the Falcons the last two.
Two weeks ago West Perth was rocked with a 103-point loss to South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
RIDDOCH IMPRESSES IN FALCONS DEBUT AHEAD OF TACKLING OLD SIDE
WEST Perth and Swan Districts never fail to have some added intrigue particularly in the annual ANZAC Round contests and this Saturday will be no different as Rudy Riddoch lines up for the Falcons for the first time against his old side.
Riddoch made his West Perth league debut in the Good Friday victory over Peel Thunder in Mandurah and the burly forward was impressive with 19 possessions, seven marks and a goal.
He added an extra dimension to the Falcons forward-line and looks set to be a key player now for West Perth moving forward.
