FALCONS VETERANS SHINE IN THRILLING WIN OVER TIGERS
ROUND 11 PREVIEW V CLAREMONT
WEST Perth heads to Claremont Oval for the first time in 2018 looking to continue its good recent run against Claremont and to further close in on second position on the WAFL ladder.
The Tigers and Falcons have built quite the strong rivalry in recent years where tempers have often boiled over and tight finishes have become the expected, and there's little reason not to expect something similar this Saturday at Claremont Oval.
There's plenty at stake for both clubs too with Claremont trying to break into the top five and West Perth attempting to further consolidate their position and close in further on South Fremantle's second spot.
FALCONS JUST FALL SHORT AGAINST THUNDER
ROUND 10 PREVIEW V PEEL THUNDER
WEST Perth heads south to take on the two-time reigning premiers Peel Thunder for the first time in 2018 on Saturday looking for a third consecutive win and to keep the pressure on for second spot.
It shapes as a fascinating contest in Mandurah on Saturday with Peel trying to close in on a top five position by winning consecutive games for the first time in 2018 while West Perth makes the journey to Bendigo Bank Stadium looking to make it three consecutive wins itself.
The game will also be the first meeting between Peel and West Perth in 2018 with the Thunder winning their last meeting in Round 16 last year at Joondalup Arena by five goals.
KEITEL SPARKS BIG FALCONS WIN ON WA DAY
MONAGHAN REACHES ANOTHER MILESTONE AS WEST PERTH COACH
HE is already West Perth's longest-ever serving coach and now Bill Monaghan reaches another significant milestone in Monday's WA Day Derby becoming the first Falcons boss to ever get to 200 matches.
It's remarkable to now consider that Monaghan did a long coaching apprenticeship and there was a time when he thought he might not even get a chance to be a WAFL senior coach going back a little over a decade.
Following 204-game playing career at both Subiaco and Peel Thunder, Monaghan stepped into a coaching role back with the Lions leading the reserves to great success and being part of the league triumphs too under Peter German.
WA DAY DERBY PREVIEW V EAST PERTH
WEST Perth is back in action on WA Day hosting East Perth in the traditional Derby at Joondalup Arena looking to keep its impressive recent form going and stopping a three-game losing run against the Royals.
Joondalup Arena will play host to the WA Day Derby for 2018 with bounce down set for 1.10pm with the game to be broadcast live on Channel 7.
Not only should it be a tremendous contest to watch, but also one with plenty on the line for both teams with West Perth entering Round 9 in third position with a 4-3 record while East Perth is 4-3 as well but in fifth spot courtesy of an inferior percentage.
IN THEIR WORDS – BLAKE WILHELM WA DAY COLUMN
THE first eight rounds of the season have flown by and we find ourselves sitting with a 4-3 record after some close losses to top two teams South and Subi which could have gone either way. Plenty has happened both on and off the field so far in 2018 and it's great to see a few old heads coming back down to the club.
One of those old heads is none other than Corey 'Don't forget your RPE' Green. Greeny comes back to head up our strength and conditioning program this year, and boy does he love it. You should have seen the pure joy on his face from watching us suffer through pre-season. When I say suffer, I'm not just referring to the running, but the Spotify playlist made up of non-stop, back to back, encore versions of Post Malone – it wasn't fun.
There may be some method to the madness, though, as the boys are fitter than ever and it's showing on the field. One thing I can't get on board with is his diet though. He has two jars of peanut butter by the spoonful a day. That's definitely not something I can get around.
MEL WHINNEN INDUCTED TO AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME
HE is one of the finest ever players to represent the West Perth Football Club and this week the legendary Mel Whinnen took his rightful place in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Whinnen's remarkable legacy from his 371-game career with West Perth that included a record nine fairest and best awards and four premierships has long been cemented. But it received another significant accolade on Tuesday night when he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame at a glittering ceremony in Melbourne.
Whinnen was inducted alongside Bernie Naylor, Terry Wallace, Wayne Johnston, David Neitz and Matthew Scarlett with Kevin Sheedy elevated to legend status.
