IN THEIR WORDS – DREW ROHDE ROUND 7

Friday, May 6, 2016 - 7:32 PM - by Drew Rohde

AARON Black, Jay van Berlo and Max Duffy all have a few things in common - all three are superstars on the field and all three have previously tried their hands at writing the infamous 'In Their Words column'.

All three have attempted to raise the bar set by Laine 'Make sure you floss' Rasmussen when it comes to voicing their views and opinions on how the season is tracking for the club, as well as voicing their goals for the near future and the rest of the season.

When the club threw me the baton and asked me to write this week's article, I was both nervous and optimistic. Will I be able to compete with the big boys on the journalism front? Or will I fail miserably like Trent 'Smeagol' Manzone’s new juice plus diet? I guess we will find out.

ROUND 8 PREVIEW V PEEL THUNDER

Friday, May 6, 2016 - 2:48 PM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth and Peel Thunder both made finals last year, are each on two-game winning streaks and looking to continue that form in what shapes as a tremendous contest at HBF Arena on Saturday.

Following a slow start to the season, West Perth has found some form the past two weeks with wins over Swan Districts and Claremont to have improved to a 3-4 record and being 4-4 heading into its bye next week would be a good result considering the Falcons were 1-4 at one stage.

Peel has also been impressive the past two weeks beating Claremont by 21 points and then dominating Perth last Saturday to win by 77 to improve to a 4-2 record. A win on Saturday will see the Thunder close in on a top two spot with a clash against the second placed South Fremantle next week.

FALCONS BENEFITTING FROM EMERGING GROUP

Thursday, May 5, 2016 - 8:06 PM - by Chris Pike

THE returns of Shane Nelson and Kody Manning has had a significant impact on West Perth getting back on the WAFL winner's list the past two weeks, but so has the continued emergence of a host of players including Luke Meadows, Dean Munns and Joel Leeson.

West Perth's season was teetering on the edge at 1-4 heading into the Anzac Day Round clash with Swan Districts, but Nelson returned and delivered 29 possessions and 13 clearances as the Falcons came away with a hard fought 23-point victory.

West Perth then headed to Kulin to take on Claremont on Saturday and took out a gritty and thrilling seven-point victory with Manning making his return for his first game since Round 2 and contributing two goals from 19 possessions.

COUNTRY TRIP WORTH THE EFFORT

Monday, May 2, 2016 - 10:54 AM - by Darrell Kent

WEST Perth came away with the points against Claremont at Kulin on Saturday in a terrific game of football but there was much more to the day than the game. The hospitality of the locals was tremendous, premiership players Simon Duckworth and Marc Crisp, who both play for Kulin, ran water for the league team, and Rod Duckworth, the father of West Perth players Simon, Regan and Brayden helped out as a trainer.

Throw into this mix the attendance of WAFL legends Bill Dempsey, John O’Connell and Graham Moss as well as a number of supporters who travelled by bus and car and you have the hallmarks of a wonderful day; which it was. It was a very good game of football that literally had locals on the edge of their seats until the dying seconds.

The first quarter set the tone with each team kicking four goals each. The first went to Claremont tall forward, Darcy Cameron, who kicked the first of his four at the one-minute mark. The Falcons steadied to kick the next three with the first two going to Andrew Strijk who was moved forward. His strong marking and kicking was a danger to the Claremont defence all day. Jay van Berlo hit the scoreboard and midway through the term West Perth led by 13 points. Read More [+]

FALCONS TAKE THE POINTS IN KULIN THRILLER

Monday, May 2, 2016 - 10:46 AM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth took some confidence out of a hard fought win over Swan Districts to Kulin and with the added support of another returning premiership player the Falcons prevailed in a high-quality contest over Claremont by seven points.

The Falcons' season was potentially on the rocks at 1-4 following a disappointing derby loss to East Perth but now with wins over Swan Districts and Claremont things are decidedly back on track at 3-4 heading into Saturday's return to HBF Arena against the third placed Peel Thunder.

Kulin hosted a WAFL fixture for the first time on Saturday and they were treated to a tremendous contest between two teams hungry for their third wins of 2016.

ROUND 7 PREVIEW V CLAREMONT

Friday, April 29, 2016 - 3:27 PM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth and Claremont head to Kulin to play the first County Sport Enrichment Scheme clash of 2016 and it's a crucial match for both clubs who played finals in 2015.

The Falcons and Tigers have both won two games through the opening six rounds of the season and the winner on Saturday should find themselves entrenched in the top five by the end of the round while the loser will have some hard work to do in coming weeks.

It will be the first time that Kulin has hosted a WAFL match as well but it is a town rich in history for West Perth with Simon Duckworth, Brayden Duckworth and Marc Crisp among those to have emerged from the region to have standout careers with the Falcons.

FALCONS TO BE FURTHER BOOSTED FOLLOWING NELSON RETURN

Thursday, April 28, 2016 - 3:43 PM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth received a huge boost with the return of Shane Nelson in Saturday's win over Swan Districts and now another premiership star is set to make a comeback this week for the Falcons' trip to Kulin to take on Claremont.

West Perth has had a horror run of injuries to key players to start 2016 and that has played a part in the Falcons' losing four of their opening five games heading into Saturday's clash with Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.

But the surprise early return of Nelson from a fractured finger gave West Perth a significant psychological boost, but he also delivered in performance with 28 possessions after quarter-time to have a big say in the Falcons' eventual 23-point victory.

BILL GETS GRILLED – BILL MONAGHAN ROUND 6 Q & A

Wednesday, April 27, 2016 - 11:10 PM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth premiership coach Bill Monaghan discusses Saturday's important win over Swan Districts and looks ahead to Saturday's clash against Claremont in Kulin.

QUESTION: How important were those four points to get?
ANSWER: We turned up and played a lot better brand of football, albeit against a side who probably in a lot of ways their season has mirrored ours. They've been missing key personnel and haven’t been playing the greatest footy, and both of us have been struggling to kick goals and getting it inside-50. It had been like looking into the mirror watching Swans the last week or two in planning for them, but all we could do was go out and beat the opposition. It felt like we probably controlled the game than the scoreline reflected and in the first 10 minutes the ball was played exclusively in our half but we kicked three points. Then we kicked five out of bounds on the full having shots on goal in the third quarter and at one stage we were 2.9. All sides experience that, but when you haven’t been winning it makes the coach nervous and it makes the players a little bit jumpy. But to their credit they fought through that and played some good footy. We're still a fair way off playing our best footy but it was a step in the right direction.
