SCANS this week have unfortunately confirmed that West Perth premiership midfielder Matt Guadagnin's 2015 WAFL season is over and that he will require the second knee reconstruction of his decorated career.

Guadagnin was having another strong game to continue his outstanding recent form during Saturday's eventual 49-point win over Perth at Lathlain Park until he went down with a knee injury.

The worst was immediately thought when he was examined by the club's medical staff and now scans have confirmed that he has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and that he will require a full knee reconstruction.

WEST Perth put in a dominant performance to beat Perth by 49 points at Lathlain Park on Saturday with the only thing stopping the margin being closer to triple figures being an inaccurate first half from the Falcons.

West Perth cruised to the eventual 14.25 (109) to 9.6 (60) victory to further consolidate second position on the WAFL ladder but the win could have been significantly greater had it not been for the 19 behinds in the first half.

The win means that the Falcons have now won four in-a-row this season to remain clear in second position and also eight straight against the Demons.

The only downside of the afternoon was a knee injury to veteran premiership midfielder Matt Guadagnin who was again having a terrific game with 17 possessions, five marks, three inside 50s and a goal with the 31-year-old back to his very best form in recent weeks as well.

WEST Perth is looking to continue its tremendous form from before the bye searching for a fourth straight win this season and an eighth consecutive victory over Perth when the Falcons take on the Demons at Lathlain Park as part of the WAFL's NAIDOC Round.

West Perth won three straight matches prior to the bye, including over reigning premiers Subiaco, to sit clear in second position on the ladder and now the Falcons begin a run of eight straight matches to close the season looking to keep that winning form going.

Perth has won just the once this season to appear set for a second straight wooden spoon but the Demons have been much more competitive than that suggests as they prepare to take on the second placed West Perth who is on a three-game winning run including a win over Subiaco two weeks ago.

IT HAS been a really exciting WAFL season so far as evidenced by the tightly compacted positioning of the ladder.

I can’t recall playing a season of footy where the current ladder position counted for so little entering a game. I would imagine each team rightfully holds the opinion that their best footy is capable of winning any game regardless of the opponent.

We are no different.

AN EXCITING change for the 2015 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season is the return to a Top 5 finals system that will create an additional round of finals and give all nine clubs extra incentive to finish the season as strongly as possible.

The WAFL clubs voted last year to introduce a top five in 2015, and with one of the closest seasons in WAFL history currently underway, the top 5 on the ladder may not be finalised until the eve of the finals.

WAFL Top 5 Finals Format

The WAFL has only ever played with a top 5 during four seasons, from 1991 to 1994, when Claremont and East Fremantle each won two flags.

THE West Perth Football Club is saddened by the news that 1942 premiership player and leading goalkicker Ted Brunton passed away earlier this week.

Brunton joined West Perth in 1942 from Swan Districts during World War II and had an immediate impact at the Cardinals along with Sandover Medallist Laurie Bowen and Ralph Latham.

He arrived at West Perth as a 16-year-old and turned 17 during the 1942 season with the WANFL playing as an underage competition during the war.
