WEST Perth scored an important victory against Perth at HBF Arena on Saturday. As the qualifying rounds draw to a close the battle for a top two finish is heating up. The Falcons needed to beat the lower placed Demons to maintain their advantage in third spot and they did this when they recorded a 46-point victory. They weren’t headed at any stage and remain third with three games, and four rounds remaining.

ROUND 19 PREVIEW V PERTH
WEST Perth looks to stretch its winning run over Perth to 11 with the Falcons hosting the Demons at HBF Arena on Saturday with the chance of entering the WAFL's top two if results go their way.
West Perth has a chance to enter the WAFL's top two with a win at HBF Arena over Perth on Saturday but the Demons have shown strong improvement the second half of the year and will be looking for a first win over the Falcons since 2011.
The Falcons might have lost to East Perth two weeks ago before the bye last week, but with South Fremantle having lost three straight now they remain only percentage out of second position.
SHORT AND LONG-TERM INJURED FALCONS ALL SET TO RETURN
WEST Perth coach Bill Monaghan is looking forward to having a full team available in the coming weeks with Trent Manzone, Steve Potente, Andrew Strijk and Matt Guadagnin among those to return at some level this week against Perth with Nick Rodda still some weeks away.
While the likes of Shane Nelson, Joel Leeson, Joe Morrow, Kody Manning, Chris Keunen and Laine Rasmussen are all back up and running now after significant time on the sidelines throughout 2016, there were still plenty of players missing in the derby loss to East Perth prior to the bye.
Andrew Strijk was a late withdrawal meaning Corey Chalmers was called up following a half in the reserves while Manzone missed his final week through suspension, Potente was out with a sore knee and Rodda remains out with his quad injury.
BILL GETS GRILLED – BILL MONAGHAN ROUND 17 Q & A
WEST Perth premiership coach Bill Monaghan discusses the derby loss to East Perth in tough conditions ahead of a bye and a clash with an improved Perth this Saturday at HBF Arena.
QUESTION: The game against East Perth saw you dominate in almost every area bar the scoreboard, does that leave you quite frustrated?
ANSWER: It does but it just makes it hard to critique the game. We did a lot right and had a poor 10 or 15-minute patch in the third quarter that East Perth took their chances in. We had kicked 2.12 to half-time and we were 2.14 at one stage and whilst the conditions weren’t great there were probably three or four of those that were relatively easy shots. We are always disappointed when we lose but a lot of the processes were right and a lot of the effort was right so we can't be overly critical.

WHEN STATS DO LIE
Seven more scoring shots, 33 more inside 50s, 49 more possessions and having the best of the free kick count 20 to seven. You would normally expect that these types of numbers would see you on the right side of the scoreboard but this wasn’t the case at Medibank Stadium on Saturday. West Perth went down to East Perth 8.7 (55) to 4.18 (42) after controlling the play for long periods but failing to reflect this domination on the scoreboard.
INNACURATE FALCONS MADE TO PAY BY ROYALS
WEST Perth was made to pay for its first half inaccuracy and then denied a chance of a final quarter comeback with the torrential rain as East Perth won Saturday's derby at Medibank Stadium by 13 points.
West Perth dominated the first half but went into the break with just 2.12 on the scoreboard and a lead of only eight points over East Perth. The Royals then kicked five goals to nil in the third term before the heavy rain came and that set up their eventual 8.7 (55) to 4.18 (42) victory.
The loss sees West Perth miss a chance to improve to second spot on the WAFL ladder ahead of this weekend's bye and then a clash with the in-form Perth at HBF Arena.
DERBY WINNER TO BE AWARDED POLLY FARMER TROPHY
EAST Perth Football Club and West Perth Football Club will play for an annual Polly Farmer Trophy from 2017 onwards to recognise and celebrate Farmer’s success as one of the greatest players at each club.
The annual fixture, which was announced today on the 7 Network’s WAFL broadcast game between East Perth and West Perth, will see these clubs club host the game in alternating seasons.
It is intended that The Polly Farmer Trophy will be struck from the famous image of Polly Farmer .
ROUND 17 PREVIEW V EAST PERTH
WEST Perth enters Saturday's derby at Medibank Stadium against East Perth having won nine of its last 10 games and a win for the Falcons will see them move into a second position making the minor premiership a realistic possibility.
East Perth and West Perth are both in winning form, have significant reasons to win and they are the fiercest of rivals all pointing towards a clash to savour on Saturday at Medibank Stadium.
The Royals and Falcons have met in the grand final of 2013 and preliminary final of 2015 so they aren’t strangers to doing battle with plenty on the line in recent times, and that is indeed the case again on Saturday.
